Change 4 Life Primary Clubs

In response to significant demand from the primary sector, we are proposing to expand the C4LSC to establish 4500 primary school based Change for Life Sports Clubs.  These will model the secondary club approach, positioned to attract less active young people by creating modern and innovative clubs on the primary school site.

They will be focused on primary age children in years 3 and 4 where there is currently a gap in the provision of high quality school club and competitive opportunities. Also, where there is a need for progression from activity that focuses on the ‘fundamental’ activity such as simple skill development at years 1 and 2 to ‘sport specific’ activity that involves playing the sport at years 5 and 6.  Therefore the activity will be ‘multi-sport’, with a focus on engaging activities that take their influence from a range of sports skills that will be modified to be delivered at minimal expense, in any school irrespective of location and size.

There will be three themes for these clubs with the rationale for the choice of these themes being based on their attractiveness to appeal to the type of young person we are targeting and their consistency with the multi-sport approach. Also, recognising the window of opportunity to inspire young people through the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we would want to try and utilize the power and Inspiration of Olympic and Paralympic sports. This could be under a brand that replicates the idea of multi-discipline events that occur at the games such as triathlon, modern pentathlon and decathlon.   The themes of the Change for Life Sports Clubs are:-

Adventure (decision making, teamwork, problem solving)

  • To replicate and recreate some of the skills and scenarios associated with the five Olympic and Paralympic sports of sailing, rowing, canoeing, windsurfing and cycling, along with other adventure activities such as orienteering, caving and climbing.  The skills and scenarios will include activities such as games and activities which develop trust, teamwork, risk taking, an understanding of the environment.

Creative (self expression, freedom, creativity)

  • To replicate and recreate some of the skills and scenarios associated with the Olympic and Paralympic sports of gymnastics, trampolining, diving, and synchronised swimming along with other creative activities associated with the cultural Olympics and Paralympics such as dance, which would provide the 5th sport in this theme.  The skills and scenarios will include activities which enable young people to understand movement and encourage self expression.

Target (focus, personal challenge, determination)

  • To replicate and recreate some of the skills and scenarios associated with the Olympic and Paralympic sports of archery, fencing, boccia, and goalball along with other target sports such as Golf, which becomes an Olympic sport in 2016.  The skills and scenarios will include activities which enable young people to develop hand-eye co-ordination as well as understand the principles and tactics of target sports.
