The School Games
The School Games is the Government’s new structure for competitive school sport and a key strategy for creating a meaningful sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will involve all young people in Years 3 to 13, with a range of opportunities to ensure the inclusion of young people of all abilities and backgrounds through:
Intra-School Competition: within a school environment, house teams or form groups competing in varied and regular competition throughout the year, culminating in a School Games Day.
Inter-School Competition: regular leagues taking place between schools at a local level throughout the year, with the best school teams qualifying to take part at the county level School Games Festival. This inter-school competition will be driven by the new School Games Organiser.
National Event: a major multi-sport event for the most talented young people of school age. The event will provide a showcase for our best sporting talent. In 2012, this will include the use of some venues in the Olympic Park.
Nationally and locally the School Games is being delivered through partnerships. The national partnership is made up of: The Department for Culture, Media and Sport who have overall policy leadership, supported by the Department for Education and the Department of Health. Sport England who are the Lottery distributor and are supporting the engagement of Sports Governing Bodies and County Sports Partnerships. The British Paralympic Association, bringing the vision and inspiration of the Paralympics. The Youth Sport Trust, the landscape lead organisation for school sport, commissioned by Sport England to provide development support to schools, sports and other local partners.
