Yesterday (1st of April 2009) was the first ever whole Penwith Primary Tag Rugby event held at Hayle Rubgy Club. This event was part of the 'Child Victims of Crime' charity where the top ten teams will progress on to the West Cornwall final @ Redruth Rugby Club on the 10th June 2009.
In previous years Penwith School Sport Partnership had always run five seperate family tag rugby competitions but this year we invited all schools to one venue. 18 schools in total entered the event and everyone had a great time in the sun. The rugby club allowed us to use the changing facilities, toilets, clubhouse, first aid room and they provided refreshments.
With the assistance of St Ives & Hayle Police stations, Tracy Fuller & Dave Horam(Youth Interventions Officers), students from Penwith College and Hayle school the event ran smoothly. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day.
I must say a big thank you to Andrew Richards from Hayle Rugby Club who co-ordinated the use of the facility at Hayle RFC. Andrew also had the opportunity to talent spot some young budding rugby stars for the mini and junior sections at Hayle RFC. For more info about attending the coaching sessions at the club visit

Another thank you must go to Sergeant Mike Friday from St Ives Police Station who was a great help in the lead up to the event, providing great support from his team. Thank you Mike and your team for your continued support.
RESULTS:
Well done to Penpol School who won the event. The coaching that they have been receiving is now starting to pay off. I think this team will have a good chance of winning the West Cornwall event. Well done Penpol.
The were pushed all of the way in the final by local school, Connor Downs, who were very impressive runners up. Well done to Connor Downs. You certainly have some talent in that team to take to the West Cornwall Finals in June and push for the honours.
The group winners (& semi finalists) were as follows:
Group One: Penpol
Group Two: St Pirans
Group Three: Connor Downs
Group four: St Uny
The ten teams that qualified from the group stages for the Regional finals on the 10th of June 2009 @ Redruth RFC are (in no particular order):
Penpol, St Just, Newlyn, St Pirans, Leedstown, Connor Downs, Nancledra, St Uny, Alverton, Heamoor.
St Madderns School won the fair play award and received a Cornish Pirates signed rugby ball. Thank you to St Madderns for showing everyone the New Zealand 'Haka' that they had learnt during their Dance Mixx sessions this term. That was very impressive.
Well done to all of these teams that have qualified for the next stage. I will be in touch soon to try and supply some tag rugby coaching into your schools to help you prepare for the West Cornwall Finals.
The final results & match scores will be added to the 'Resources' section of website soon. Photos will be added to the 'Gallery' section later today.
Yours in sport
