NATIONAL SCHOOLS BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013

PENWITH COLLEGE

The first round of the Badminton England National Schools Badminton Championships took place over two Tuesday at Penwith College Sports Hall on the 22 and 29 January.

Schools from Mounts Bay Academy, Humphry Davy, Cape Cornwall, Bolitho , and St Ives competed in the year group 7.8.9 on the 22nd.

Teams of 4 girls and 4 boys battled through the afternoon and the girls championship was won by Humphry Davy who throughout the tournament were too strong for their opponents.

The boys tournament resulted in a fantastic final between Mounts Bay and Bolitho A. It was a fascinating contest with the points tally fluctuating as the games unfolded. Final points were Mounts Bay 56, Bolitho 54 with Mounts Bay just piping their rivals with a3-2 game score line.

The same schools competed on the 29 January with the exception of St Ives.

Again some fantastic play by all players from all schools.  However in the Boys in particular Mounts Bay were simply too strong with a quartet of boys three of whom represent Cornwall at their respective age groups.

In the girls there were some close matches, Cape Cornwall being the surprise package resulting in a brilliant 2nd place. Mounts Bay again worked their opponents hard in each match and took top position.

All the winners now go through to the County final which takes place on Wednesday 27 February at Carn Brea, winners from these finals will then represent Cornwall in the Regional Round at Exeter University in March. Mounts Bay year 10.11 boys will hope to replicate last season success at County level and take a further step at the Regionals.

Thanks to all the Leaders from Penwith College who ensured the competition ran smoothly.
