AQUASPLASH FESTIVAL

Penzance Fire Station and Penwith School Sports Partnership have been working closely together on their community projects. On Tuesday the 10th of November 2009, fire fighters from Penzance made a huge splash by co-ordinating and running a Primary School Aqua Festival at Penzance Leisure Centre.

Over 100 children from local schools took part in the Aqua splash event. In true ‘we are the champions’ style the event was a huge success, enjoyed by all who took part. It was a great opportunity for the Penzance crew to promote an active & healthy lifestyle and team building skills.

The event involved challenging games which required not only a great deal of effort, but also bucket loads of enthusiasm to complete! One activity required two competing crews to row their ‘boats’ across the pool and dress a team member in fire kit, one piece of clothing at a time. The shouts of encouragement from the children nearly lifted the roof off!

The event enabled the fire-fighters to work more closely with their community and build up a strong bond with the schools. Each child took home an educational goody bag containing posters and gifts, brimming with information on home fire safety and beach awareness.

Watch Manager Des O’Connell was very pleased with the success of the event, adding ‘It is important for us to show ourselves to the young community, and break down barriers so we can get important safety messages across to vulnerable groups. Our aim is to reduce Hoax calls from young people, to role model future careers in the service for boys and girls and to maintain a healthy active outlook, and encourage after school activity to reduce crime and boredom’.

Gemma Wilson (the Senior School Sports Competition Manager for Cornwall) stated that’ the event aligns perfectly with the Amateur Swimming Associations (ASA) development plans for school swimming competitions’. Gemma added ‘this also highlights how working in collaboration with other organisations enables great community projects to come together’.
